Home Decorating Tips for the Holidays

The holiday season is an exciting time for traditions, baking, family, fun holiday events, holiday lights, and whatever other tradition you enjoy celebrating during the season. It’s also the time we pull out the holiday decorations and deck the halls. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, or just enjoy some extra winter cheer, here are a few tips to consider when planning your holiday décor this year. We hope these tips will help you get your home in order so that you can focus on the warmth and beauty of the season, instead of holiday stress. Happy decorating!

Get Organized

The holiday season can quickly become a whirlwind of stress and chaos, with families home from work and school, several holiday parties to attend, and visitors coming and going from your home. Before decorating your home, purge as many items as possible to make room for new gifts and new supplies coming in. Find a dedicated space for gift wrapping complete with plenty of tape, scissors, and festive paper. Also, take a few minutes to discard any holiday decorations that you do not use, to make clean up easier and simpler when its time to pack everything away after the new year.

Pick A Theme

Another helpful tip in decorating for the holidays is to pick a theme for your décor. Pinterest can be your best friend when it comes to finding ideas and inspiration. The best way to begin is to pick your color scheme and depending on your budget, purchase new decorations or add some new pieces to your current collection. Starting with a fresh theme each year can be a fun way to make each year feel exciting and new. Having a set theme can make your home have a cohesive look, from your tree down to your tablescape.

Pick a Style

As we all know, holiday decorations come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional themes like bright red and green, to more neutral colors like grey and white. Whatever your style is, determine what you prefer before you begin decorating. There are many ways you can apply your style throughout your home. Pick 3 or 4 wrapping papers that fit your style, colors, and theme, so that when all the gifts are wrapped under the tree, it can create a cohesive look, in addition to the rest of your home décor. Swap out decorative elements on your living room furniture and replace with holiday themed throws and pillows or change bedding in your rooms to a holiday theme. Sometimes less is more, but simple touches in each room of your home can make a huge difference in how your whole house feels, especially when you are entertaining.

Get Festive with Flowers and Greenery

Another favorite (and easy!) decorating tip for the season is to freshen up your home with winter flowers and greenery. Plants and flowers that work well for the winter season are Poinsettias, potted holly, Japanese cherry blossoms, blue perennials, and lilies, and they all make for great center pieces for the table or placed in vases throughout the home. Garland is another great traditional greenery to use in entryways, staircases, or on fireplace mantles. Incorporating natural elements is a simple way to create a homey feel during the season.

While there is no right or wrong way to decorate for the holiday season, there are so many exciting ways to fill your home with the holiday cheer and make it a peaceful place to retreat to during this busy season!
